Is A Surgical Technology Career Right For You?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for surgical technologists are projected to grow at a much faster average than other jobs within the next decade.

Hospital operating rooms, ambulatory care/day surgery unites and ob/delivery units are some of the primary employers for surgical technologists. Other career related opportunities are Central Sterile technician, Private scrub technologist, laser/endoscopy technician, tissue/organ procurement, and surgical sales representative.

There are several emotional or psychological, and physical demands that must be weighed before enrolling in a PA surgical technologist college.

A primary function of the surgical technologist is to perform duties before, during, and after a surgical procedure to facilitate effective surgical outcomes. These duties include application of knowledge of surgical supplies, equipment and instrumentation. Surgical technologists practice sterile and aseptic technique and ensure that the surgical environment is safe.

A surgical technologist must also be organized, orderly, with great manual dexterity, since the demands of the operating room require them to respond quickly and pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. Anyone considering a Pennsylvania surgery technology career should also possess a great deal of personal responsibility. They must be able to act quickly and accurately to respond to the needs of the surgeon and the surgical team. Other attributes include physical stamina and the ability to work under stressful conditions.
