STS Partners with McCann Business Students to Conduct Survey

Pottsville, PA (July 18, 2017) – Students enrolled in the Small Business Management course at the Pottsville Campus of McCann School of Business & Technology, assisted the Schuylkill Transportation System (STS) with conducting the Fixed Route Rider Survey required every 2.5 years by PennDot.

Surveys were conducted onboard STS fixed route buses proceeding from Union Station and select bus stops. Surveys were conducted on paper and electronically via the STS website and Facebook Page.  The total number of required survey responses was based upon a percentage of total yearly ridership for the ten fixed routes which the Schuylkill Transportation System operates throughout the county. The implementation of the survey project was intended to provide valuable information on how well the STS is performing in regards to meeting the needs of riders. A total target amount of 275 surveys were achieved.   Data Centric Services located in Camp Hill, PA has been tasked with the responsibility of working with transit agencies in the state of Pennsylvania to design, develop and implement the survey process.

This hands-on project helped the students understand a regulated industry and what is required.  It also helped the students understand how target markets and needs can be identified through the use of a survey process. Although the students did not analyze the data, they were able to observe and participate in the process on a daily basis and calculate daily benchmarks needed to meet the survey goal.

McCann School of Business & Technology Business Administration students who participated in this project were: Brandon Brown (Pottsville), Brittany E. Gummel (Shamokin), Anthony Holmes (Pottsville), Jean L. Sattazahn (Pottsville), Leeanna L. Sementelli (Pottsville), and Bobbi J. Whitenight (Port Clinton).
